ACEROLA BERRY AND ITS BENEFITS

Rich in vitamin C, Acerola berry is a superfruit (called so as it is rich in nutrients) similar to cherry. It is locally produced in West Indies. As it is grown in warm climates, one can produce it oneself provided the availability of warm climate. It has a sour and sweet taste and can be consumed in many ways. It can be used fresh and eaten directly just as grapes or can be used as in the form of jams or juices. It has as such very low calories but when used in jelly or juice form, added sugar increase the level of calories. Thus it is preferable to use it directly. It is rich in vitamin C; only one berry has 80mg of vitamin C which is 30 times more than that of in an orange.

Amount of vitamin C is higher in acerola when it is unripe than when full-grown. You all must know the benefits of vitamin C and being rich in it Acerola has many benefits. Following are the benefits of this wonderful little acerola cherry:

• As vitamin C rich fruits are used to relief cold and flu symptoms thus acerola berry is very useful in this regard.

• It makes immune system tougher and healthier.

• It helps prevent heart disease and cancer by preventing oxygen molecules damage - the main reason of these age related diseases.

• It helps the body increase the production of collagen, a tough fibrous protein, which helps wounds heal faster.

• Sugar level is reduced by the use of acerola as it contains polyphenols, thus is good for diabetics.

• Acerola berry extract helps prevent skin discoloration and help treating damaged tissues as it contains high level of antioxidants.

• It helps in digestion by keeping acidity level normal.

• It help reduce cholesterol level when mixed with soy products.
