There is nothing more adorable than a fuzzy, playful puppy. It's hard to resist those trusting faces and silly antics. Dogs are just about the best companions anyone could want-faithful, fun, and forgiving. But before you decide to bring one of those little fur balls home and give it a dog bed next to your chair and a place in your heart, you better consider a few hard, cold facts. Puppies, which inevitably turn into dogs, have needs. In addition to love and affection, puppies and dogs need a continual supply of food and water. They need training, which is not a one-time event and pretty much continues throughout the dog's life. Dogs need medical care; even if they are perfectly healthy they need vaccinations and routine appointments with the veterinarian. Depending on the breed they will need a certain amount of grooming and bathing. And your dog will need supplies. The most basic supplies include bowls for food and water, a leash and collar, and a dog bed. Beyond that you and your dog may benefit from dog crates, training collars, and cages. Dog beds are by no means one-size-fits-all. Just like people, some of whom prefer soft beds while others like hard ones, most dogs are very particular about what they sleep on. Plus, their needs change throughout their lives. Raised dog beds protect dogs from floor drafts and cold floors. Mold- and mildew-resistant, the breathable fabric is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Dog cushions and mattresses have removable covers, making them easy to clean. Soft foam lining provides warmth, comfort, and insulation. With attractive covers lined with waterproof material, these waterproof dog beds are practical and stylish. Dog crates are ideal for house training puppies and keeping dogs comfortable and safe, especially at night or when you are out of the house. Crates cut house training time in half, and solve behavioral problems such as excessive barking, chewing, scratching, and nervousness. Many dogs act as if their crates are their refuges-they go into them when they are scared or tired or just need privacy. Soft crates are very portable, excellent for visiting. Airline-approved crates have strong plastic shells and wire mesh doors. Car crates made from quality heavy gauge wire are designed to fit behind car seats and follow the contour of a hatchback. Economical wire dog cages are fine for dogs that don't spend much time in their cages. Plain or elegant, a dog collar serves a variety of purposes. Primarily the collar provides a place to connect the leash. Flashing and reflective collars increase nighttime visibility and safety. Dog training collars works wonders with dogs that pull when on leash. If you are willing to put the time and effort into training, exercising, and caring for a dog, you will be rewarded many times over. Before you make the commitment, however, make sure you have the resources to provide your new friend with everything he or she needs to live a happy and healthy life. Once you are sure of that, you can start looking for the perfect spot for the dog bed!
