What is affection? Affection is warmth, love, intimacy and joy.

According to C.S Lewis, affection is summarised as

Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our lives.

Dr Randy Carlson has a very good analysis of love and affection. In the article he mentioned that affection is a step beyond love. It says

Affection takes the loving relationship between a man and woman in marriage into the deeper realm of tender expressions that result in feelings of closeness, passion, and security. Affection takes work because it requires knowledge of what makes the other person tick.

It further states that

Affection isn't sexual, but it naturally leads to sexual satisfaction.
Affection isn't time, but it requires time to accomplish.
Affection isn't communication, but without communication there can be no affection.
Affection isn't romance, but it typically involves romantic spontaneity, creativity, and fun.

What do those represent? Hugs and Kisses! "X" refers to "Hugs" while "O" refers to "Kisses". This wasn't used to be so. In fact "X" its origins show that "X" means kisses while "O" means hugs! Read this if you like to explore what has history done to XOXO.

We give each other hugs as a form of encouragement, pats on the back to say "You've done an extremely good job. Well done! Keep it up!" Yes, hugs are wonderful stabilisers and energy boosters even for friends. Have you given your family and friends this gift of affection?

Kisses! Mmmuaackkzz! A ususal way of "spelling" kisses, if they could be spelt. Have you been sending virtual kisses to your special someone? Have you been receiving these expressions of affection from your special someone? You feel elated and terrific don't you? I know I do, each and every time. You will too.

Love thrives in and through affection. When you show lots of affection to your loved one and in return lots of affection, you can be sure that your relationship is thriving in lots of positive emotions and happiness. This extends to parent-child relationships too. Babies receiving lots of hugs, kisses, caresses feel loved, cared for and safe. As such they grow up to be more loving and trusting person, with a high chance that they will pass this on to their wives and offsprings too.

We know there are people who are afraid of affection. These are the ones who probably have some security issues with themselves, or they may have been emotionally abuse at an earlier stage. Child rape and sexually-abused people tend to be afraid of affection. This is so sad because they are cutting away a big part of themselves away - the need to feel emotionally safe and wanted. Help these people if you know them. Refer them to counsellors or coaching. They too stand a big chance being loved and cared for if they can eliminate those bad clouds shrouding over them due to those nasty past events.

Affection can be additive. How so? When you feel so good from those nice and warm gestures of love from your partner, wouldn't you like to have more? Would that also make you want to reciprocate and give in return? This is true for friends too, though they come in other forms like pats on the back, rub on the shoulders and yes, hugs too! XXXX!

Give the gift of affection to anyone whom you have a connection with. Be generous. The smiles on their faces will certainly make your heart leap with joy too.
