Wedding Dreams Turning Into Financial Nightmares?

By: Site Admin

by Amber Dextrose
Are you familiar with the term Bridezilla, the fetching name for the modern nightmare bride? This is the girl who, whilst trying to hold down her 9-5, is also heavily involved with organising the Day of Her Dreams and is dragging everyone down with her into an organisational and financial quagmire.

Some of us have had the dubious honour of working alongside this girl. The phone glued permanently to her ear is with orders for the florist, caterer or dressmaker, not a sign of her dedication to her job. The emails and letters she constantly appears to be sending are the fine-tuning of her big day, not company business. Money is no object, even if it all has to go on credit.

Her wedding list is planned a good year in advance and woebetide anyone who buys off-list. Her bridesmaids are ordered to go on the same diet, attend the same beautician and be pinned, prodded and pulled into the dresses of her choice. Even the guests are chivied into order as she decides who must sit by who, and who is definitely NOT attending. And it all starts eighteen months in advance, frequently with a secured loan!

And what of the poor groom? He is occasionally dragged in for a needed opinion (or more likely a confirmation that hers is right) but otherwise watches as his beautiful bride turns into a demanding, stressed-out monster. Then he is expected just to turn up on the day, well-dressed and ready to stare besottedly into her eyes.

But if the emotional toll is high, the financial costs are even higher. The average UK wedding now costs over £15,000 and as people leave getting married until later (or do it more than once), the financial burden rarely falls on the bride’s parents any more - they've spent all their savings on university fees or starter home deposits for their offspring.

“How much do you suppose this all cost?” whispered one guest recently at a dream summer wedding. We tallied up the hire of the castle, the majestic flower arrangements, the bagpiper and the designer catering for 100 guests. “Including the honeymoon [a whole month touring the Caribbean and America] or not?” someone asked. £50,000? £100,000? More?

“We get an awful lot of loan applications from people looking to finance their wedding,” says Abbi Rouse of online loan brokers, Interfinancial. “The typical figure is £10,000, which is less than the UK average. But people tell us that they are also looking to match this figure with their savings and/or money from their parents. Sometimes the parents are applying to us for a secured loan at the same time!”

The cost is not low for guests either. Stag nights and hen do’s are increasingly held in exotic locations and a long weekend is the norm, not a single night. Outfits for the big day must come up to scratch and presents bought - frequently on credit.

It seems that most modern brides are not satisfied with the homemade cake and hand-me-down dress that their mothers or grandmothers made do with. And a reception in a relative’s back garden or a cheap pub do are not on their list of must-haves either. The Big Day is meant to inspire envy in all who attend, with everyone wishing that they too could afford such a lavish event. But who is to know that the happy couple will still be paying for their day a long time after the photos are back from the (professional) photographer?

But whilst the wedding is captured on (expensively-edited) video forever, perhaps many modern couples are overlooking the joys to be had from a simple, more humble wedding and underestimating the stresses of organising a big day that will be the envy of all their friends and relatives. However, borrowing money for a UK wedding is probably here to stay.
